Epithelial Basement Membrane Dystrophy

Epithelial basement membrane dystrophy (EBMD) occurs when the superficial most layer of the cornea folds in on itself, causing irregularities in the corneal surface. This can predispose patients to recurrent corneal erosions and dry eye, which can cause pain and irritation in the eyes.

EBMD Symptoms

  • Fluctuating blurry vision
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Sharp eye pain

EBMD Treatment Options

EBMD can be treated by lubrication with artificial tears or punctal plugs. If this does not improve symptoms, or you are preparing for cataract surgery, your doctor may offer a superficial keratectomy to remove the diseased cells. During this procedure, the corneal epithelium is scraped away and allowed to grow back nice and smooth.
