Fluorescein Angiography

What is Fluorescein angiography ?

Fluorescein angiography is a diagnostic procedure created to get a better look at the circulation near the retina. A dye is injected into a vein in the arm and travels quickly through the body's circulatory system. The dye is then photographed using a specialized camera. This special camera flashes light into the eye taking several photographs at the same time. If abnormal blood vessels exist, the dye leaks into the retina or stains the blood vessels. This special diagnostic test will then provide our ophthalmologists with information about the intricate vascular structures of the retina that cannot be visualized in any other way. Once the fluorescein angiography test is complete, the doctors at Glaucoma-Cataract Consultants will immediately come in and review the computer generated digital photos with the patient and discuss the outsomes. Possible treatment options may be also discussed at this time.

Why is Fluorescein angiography performed ?

If your ophthalmologist has reason to believe that you have abnormalities in the back of the eye, fluorescein angiography may be recommended. Diabetes and macular degeneration are 2 diseases that would prompt a physician to perform this test. It is common that blood vessels will leak in diabetic patients and potentially tear. This test will help indentify the exact locations of leakage. Early detection of retina problems related to diabetes can be critical to saving vision.
